Louvre shutters are made up of horizontal slats inside a four-sided frame. Once the shutters are closed and locked, the louvres are tilted open or closed to control light, airflow, and sound filtering into the home. The angle of the louvres changes the level of privacy from people passing by. There are different ways to operate the louvres, with the easiest and neatest being hand-tilting connected louvres. Security louvre shutters can replace burglar proofing because they have built-in strengthening features to deter intruders trying to break into the home.
Louvre shutters are fitted to windows and doors either for decorative purposes or as an extra layer of protection against intruders, or both. Purely decorative louvre shutters are not designed to prevent intruders from getting into a home. Reinforced louvre shutters, such as some models in the Shutterview® range made by Trellidor, are manufactured to be strong under attack. These designs are as strong as burglar bars and are an excellent way of safeguarding people at home and work.
How often you should clean louvre shutters depends on how close you are to the coast. Within 500m of the sea – a minimum of every 2 weeks. More than 10km from the sea – a minimum of every 6 months.

Security louvre shutters look similar to other types of louvre shutter, with a full frame and horizontal slats. Where they differ is that a security louvre shutter has reinforced louvre slats, a strong lock, and a tamper-proof four sided frame. When the shutters are closed and locked, they provide excellent defence from a break-in even when the louvres are tilted open for fresh air.
Yes, louvre shutters can be used for different functions, not just to secure windows. They’re often used to enclose patios and entertainment areas. They can be fitted next to exit doors so that doors can be left open while the locked shutter prevents intruders from getting inside. Louvre shutters are sometimes used as room dividers to create smaller rooms with different uses within a large living or working space. They’re sometimes used in passages to lock up the bedroom area at night.
Louvre shutters open in different ways, depending on the configuration best suited to the opening. Bi-fold louvres have panels that are hinged in sections and fold back in pairs. Slider louvres slide open or closed inside tracks, just like a sliding door or window. French louvre shutters are double door shutters, with one door swinging open to the right and one to the left. A hinged louvre shutter is a single shutter that opens either to the left or right, depending on the location. Fixed louvre shutters that do not open are also available. The formats that open and close have locks, keys, and handles. The louvre panels are easiest to open and close if they are hand-tilted.

This means that you can lock the shutter behind you when you leave home and unlock it when you return, or you can do this from inside when you’re staying at home. This feature is especially useful if you have louvre shutter doors safeguarding your home. As an added safety measure, each computer cut key is unique, with its own serial number.

Every shutter is fully framed for strength and stability. The S-shaped louvres add to the strength of the shutter. All driving mechanisms are safely hidden internally. Models designed to provide a high level of safeguarding are internally reinforced to make them resilient when attacked by intruders.
